With the goaltending situation already a mess in Montreal, and the Canadiens looking to shed contracts, Carey Price has been rumoured to be on the trading block.
Canadiens Looking to Shed Price
According to insiders and the Canadiens' GM Kent Hughes, a trade involving Price might be difficult, but is certainly not off the table.
"I think there's always a possibility to do things," Hughes said. "I don't know what that looks like, and I don't know ultimately if that ever happens, but I certainly wouldn't describe it as an impossibility."- Kent Hughes
Price currently has 3 years left on his contract, with an AAV of $10.5 million. The way the deal is structured, however, makes it more difficult to move.
Will the Price be Right?
The goaltending situation in Montreal is far from clear. With Jake Allen and Sam Montembeault already splitting time last year, and then adding on newly acquired Casey DeSmith, there is clearly some extra fat that could be cut regarding goalie contracts for the Habs.
However, even though they may want to shed Price's contract, the Habs will have to be cognisant not to make their team any worse in trying to do so. Already in a rebuild, they need their prospects, and it may just be a better move to eat the rest of Price's contract until he retires or returns to play.
