As we approach the trade deadline, more and more rumors continue to come out of the woodworks as more teams plans are slowly revealed. Now we know two teams that could be competing with each other for the same players.
Golden Knights And Oilers Both Interested In Same Players At Trade Deadline
NHL insider Frank Seravalli has reported recently that the Golden Knights are looking to improve their depth at wing. Now that Mark Stone is out week-to-week, this need has only increased. Supposedly, the team has their eye on two players in particular, both from the Pittsburgh Penguins. They are Rielly Smith and Jake Guentzel.
That being said, the Edmonton Oilers have also been linked to both players. However, Rielly smith may be seen as more of a consolation prize for the team as we have heard more consistent rumors about the team being in on Jake Guentzel.
Friedman said Oilers won't trade Broberg or their other «big» prospects for a rental well now that the idea of a possible extension is in play this will likely change. Friedman also said Jake Guentzel is «the one» the Oilers want.
Penguins To Admit Defeat By Selling At Trade Deadline?
Both of these players being moved is contingent on one thing: the Penguins admit the year is lost and they start retooling. Kyle Dubas was adamant about making the playoffs this year and he proved that by making the biggest move of the offseason in adding Erik Karlsson. However, the team simply has not played well enough, leading many to believe that the team will be selling players like Guentzel and Smith.
It remains unclear what the long-term outlook for the Pens is, but one thing is clear. The team is not good enough to compete with its current core. As long as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are on the team they will want to be competitive, but at this point, the team is simply too old. This could lead to some very difficult conversations in the near future for the team and their fans.
