The 2024 Paris Olympics are one of the most watched sporting events of the summer, with fans all over the globe cheering on their nation's athletes to compete on the world's biggest stage. Among those competing was Claire Michel, representing Belgium in triathlon events.
However, Michel was in for more than she bargained for, becoming one of the latest victims of an Olympics controversy. Michel had to be hospitalized after falling ill, likely due to E. Coli found in the Seine river where the triathletes swam, forcing her team to pull out of the mixed event. Switzerland's Adrien Brifford also had to withdraw from upcoming events due to related gastrointestinal infections, resulting in increased concerns among competitors.
Though many believe the show must go on, it is hard to believe that a river heavily polluted with E. Coli and other contaminants can somehow, only days later, be safe enough for athletes to perform at their highest level without getting sick. Hopefully, the board is right, otherwise, they can expect lawsuits for years to come.
