Though there is little doubt that Ron MacLean is one of the least popular broadcasters at Rogers Sportsnet, reports suggest the Hockey Night in Canada host will likely finish his contract.

Ron MacLean has long been a major part of NHL broadcasting for decades, starting his work with Hockey Night in Canada almost 40 years ago. However, he has become one of the most despised members of the Rogers Sportsnet crew, playing part in a fair share of controversies. The most prominent was possibly his inaction during Don Cherry's infamous anti-immigrant rant that resulted in the cancellation of Coach's Corner. Not long after, he made a video addressing the matter in a way some have considered covering himself more than anything.
"Don's my guy, I'm in a foxhole with Don and I've decided to go one way, and he another, and you say 'OK, how can you choose principle over friendship,' but I had to."
Only two years later, Ron MacLean found himself in hot water once again for a comment he made on Hockey Night in Canada. He soon had to apologize to the media for a homophobic joke made on air, adding another mark against him from the public.

With such a controversial host, many hockey fans have waited on the news of his departure for ages. After independent reports suggested that Jeff Marek's dismissal was coming ahead of potential mass layoffs at Sportsnet, users took to social media to express their hopes he would be at the front of the line.
"Ron Maclean must be one of the cuts or what is the point."
Despite his obvious unfavorability among hockey fans, these wishes were quickly put to bed. When provided the idea Ron MacLean could be on the hit list, yyzsportsmedia implied that with only two years in his contract, Rogers Sportsnet would not relieve the senior host from his duties quite yet.
"Why make that change before the NHL Rogers deal is up in two years?"
Though most fans are likely unhappy with this development, Hockey Night in Canada fans will likely be able to manage two more years with Ron MacLean. If not, they can always change the channel while they await Sportsnet's next major broadcaster.
