Finally, two years after the brutal attack, Swedish J20 hockey defenseman Kid Andersson got justice after his assailant was sentenced in court.

It is not uncommon for hockey players to get beaten, bruised, and bloody on the ice in the heat of the game. Understandably, most leagues have a system to ensure anyone stepping out of line faces consequences. However, two years ago, one player took things miles too far in a J20 game in Sweden.

Kid Andersson of the Hille/Åbyggeby team squirted water from the bench on a player from the other team. This player, however, responded far too aggressively and swung his stick at the 19-year-old defenseman like an axe directly into his face. Aside from the blood all over the player's jersey and the floor at the scene, Andersson was left with a shattered jaw and teeth along with a busted lip. The pictures following this description are rather graphic, so view them at your own discretion.

"A U20 player (Kid Andersson) for a local team (Hille/Åbyggeby) squirted water from the bench on an opposing player. The player retaliates by swinging his stick into the players face shattering his upper jaw and teeth and splitting his lip."

Andersson soon after shared how he felt after the incident and his mental process for recovery during and after his trip to the hospital. The player could only communicate through texts and take in limited amounts of liquid food as he discussed how the situation left him ill and shocked.

"Everything happened so fast that I didn't have time to react. I didn't even know what had happened, I just saw that there was blood everywhere. Then I vomited and didn't feel well at all. I didn't know where to go. Now I don't feel so good, but think about the situation and just bury myself while trying to take it for what it is. I take one day at a time. I can't believe that this kind of thing exists in hockey and I hope I never see anything like this again on a hockey field."

Unsurprisingly, most fans who saw the incident found this reaction far beyond the line of appropriate and applauded the player's day in court. Initially, the defendant, who has remained anonymous amidst the proceedings, was charged an equivalent of $6,500 USD and acquitted on the idea that this bodily harm was his fault yet unintentional, provided the player was attempting to knock the bottle out of Andersson's hands.

"The evidence presented is therefore not sufficient to establish beyond reasonable doubt that XX acted with intent when Kid Andersson was hit by his hockey stick in the face. The prosecution is therefore not proven and XX should be acquitted."

However this ruling was recently reversed, and the defendant is now facing real legal consequences in his home country. The player, now ineligible for prison time, instead has been delivered assault charges with an increased fine and 140 hours of community service, roughly the same as five months of incarceration.

"He is sentenced to a suspended sentence, but should have been convicted of causing bodily harm rather than assault. But it's a technicality. The punishment would have been about the same probably.

The sentence will be suspended in the form of 140 hours of community service, which would have been equivalent to five months in prison. On this, the damages to Kid Andersson are increased from SEK 66,578 to SEK 92,498."

Provided the severity of the injury and the absolute carelessness of the assailant, it is no surprise that he would be punished in a court of law. Hopefully, other young players take this as a lesson in game conduct and this deed will go unrepeated.
