The Boston Bruins fell early in this year's playoffs to the underdog Florida Panthers and left many wondering about the future of their captain, Patrice Bergeron. The veteran center is widely celebrated around the league for his two-way play and excellent leadership ability. He entered this past season on a one-year contract with his future completely in the dark, and we now know what might be to come for Bergeron.
Bergeron Could Make an Announcement Soon
According to Pierre LeBrun, Bergeron has been keeping pretty much everyone around him in the dark about his future in the NHL. While the Bruins are fine waiting, their future is very contingent on his willingness to return, yet he still hasn't made a formal decision.
Bergeron and his wife are expecting another child this summer, leaving fans wondering if the responsibility of a fourth child would be too much for the Bergerons to handle while he continues to play professional hockey. The arrival of his child could be the determining factor in his decision.
Bergeron could choose to return for another year on a similar contract to the one he signed last summer, but he's not getting any younger and could decide to call it a career.
Bergeron Could Spark Bruins Rebuild
Although the Bruins haven't shown any signs of committing to a rebuild, and by all means hope to remain contenders, Bergeron's absence could leave them no choice. Without a clear-cut number-one center, the Bruins could be forced to sell some of their biggest pieces like Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak for high prices, in order to maximize their value.
For now, we'll have to just wait and see what Bergeron decides.
