A contending team has offered a former first-round pick a chance to save his career with a PTO.

Bellows Signs PTO With Carolina

Kieffer Bellows, the 19th overall pick in the 2016 NHL draft, has not had a career as one imagined he would have when he was initially drafted. He has yet to register 100 games and is now fighting for his NHL career.
It was just announced he signed a PTO with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The #Canes have signed forwards Kieffer Bellows and Jayden Halbgewachs to professional tryouts.

The two join Cory Conacher, Brendan Perlini, Nick Shore, and defenseman Nathan Beaulieu as PTOs coming to Carolina's training camp.

Bellows was selected with the hope that he would become a gritty first-line winger, a Tkachuk-esque player, but never developed into one.

What's Next?

Obviously, Bellows will get an opportunity with the Hurricanes and with the Hurricanes not having an AHL affiliate, he will have little room for error.
He will need to impress in training camp with Carolina and if he is able to do so, he could potentially earn an NHL contract and beat out some of the other PTO options Carolina has.
If he fails to do this, he will likely look to AHL teams for a contract and if he is not satisfied, he may wind up looking overseas for his next contract.
