With pre-season coming up quickly, it's expected that free agent Tomas Tatar will sign a contract somewhere soon. In a rather unexpected way, his next team may have been revealed.
Tatar to the Islanders?
In a recent post, Devils writer James Nichols revealed that Tatar had signed with a new agency, Newport Sports Management. While a new agent isn't big news in itself, who the agency represents is raising eyebrows.
Tomas Tatar is now represented by Newport Sports Management who also represent Josh Bailey, Cal Clutterbuck, Casey Cizikas, Matt Martin, Bo Horvat, J.G. Pageau, Zach Parise....
Errr, he may not be going very far... #NJDevils #Isles
Obviously, this is entirely speculation. However, it does raise questions about the direction that Tatar is leaning. Obviously, the agency has connections to the Islanders, so it can't hurt the Isles' chances of signing Tatar if they want him.
Could it Work in NY?
The Isles are definitely not in the most open position to be signing Tatar, with some cap constraints hindering their ability to dole out a widely convincing offer. However, GM Lou Lamoriello has never shied away from signing veterans in the past. It's been rumoured that Tatar is looking to stay East, as well.
Tatar is coming off a 20-goal season and has significant experience in the NHL. He could certainly help any team with depth scoring and leadership. As the season approaches, time will tell where he ends up contributing.
