The Carolina Hurricanes have been in the midst of a wave of trade rumours recently, with speculation about key defenceman like Noah Hanifin, Erik Karlsson and Brett Pesce, but today, they made a move on their blue line.

A former, controversial 'Cane

According to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, the Hurricanes are closing in on a one-year deal for Tony DeAngelo which will reportedly pay him around $1.6 million for the 2023-24 season.
DeAngelo was a member of the Carolina Hurricanes for the 2021-22 campaign where he tallied a solid 10 goals and 41 assists in 64 games played, and will now return to bolster the blue line.

What does this mean for the rest of the defence?

As mentioned, this was a team heavily linked with several defencemen on the trade market, and with plenty of talent throughout the group, this could almost certainly signal the end for someone like Pesce in Carolina.
Controversy aside, DeAngelo brings a lot on the ice, as he recorded another 42 points for the Flyers in 70 games last season, and with the Hurricanes looking to take the next step, this is a logical move for them.
