In Elliotte Friedman's latest 32 Thoughts report, he shares that Martin Necas dropped the names of two NHL teams seriously considered before deciding to stay with the Carolina Hurricanes.
However, Martin Nečas recently revealed that this deal was a statistical coin toss away from not happening. He recognized the season did not pan out for him the way he hoped, but ultimately decided that the Carolina Hurricanes is still his home and he is ready to fight for a bigger role.
"I wasn't sure. Lots of talking between us and Carolina. It was 50/50. I didn't have the best season, wasn't happy. But we turned the page, we figured out a way to stay for two more years I feel like Carolina is my home. I was drafted there, I played there for five seasons, at the end of the day I'm happy that I'm back and can prove to people there that I'm better than I was last season. I'm excited, I'm pumped."
Elliotte continued on the player's behalf, sharing that there were indeed several teams that discussed possible deals for him. However, Martin Nečas shared that two teams in particular had become part of serious discussions: the Columbus Blue Jackets and Winnipeg Jets.
"Despite heavy interrogation, Nečas avoided specifics on which teams talked to him: 'I'll be honest, there were lots.' He did confirm Columbus and Winnipeg were serious, and some Hurricanes worked him hard to stay. 'I love the guys in Carolina. Great chemistry off the ice.'"
Martin Nečas has 97 goals and 243 points in 362 games, and he would have undoubtedly been capable of performing at a high level with the Winnipeg Jets or Columbus Blue Jackets. Unfortunately, the teams will never get a chance to know what could have been for the Carolina Hurricanes forward.
