Blake Wheeler could be the key addition to this Cup-contending team
As the NHL preseason approaches, the Toronto Maple Leafs might be eyeing some veteran depth, and one name that persists is Blake Wheeler.
At 37, the veteran remains unsigned, but he could provide experience to the Leafs' lineup, especially with the uncertainty surrounding their bottom-six forwards.
Nick Robertson has reportedly requested a trade due to a lack of opportunity, and there's no guarantee that star prospects Easton «Cowboy» Cowan and
Fraser Minten will secure spots on the team this season.
Wheeler's status is still up in the air, as he was contemplating retirement following last season with the New York Rangers, but hasn't announced anything yet meaning he's still seeing what's out there.
The 16-year NHL veteran, was initially a first-round pick by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2004 NHL Draft but chose to sign with the Boston Bruins after college. He spent three years with the B's, before moving to the Atlanta Thrashers in 2011, a team that later relocated to become the Winnipeg Jets.
With the Thrashers/Jets franchise, Wheeler left, holding the record for most games played (897), assists (550), and points (812). He also ranks third in franchise history for goals, with 282.
The former captain had some of his best years in his 30s, recording back-to-back 91-point seasons with Winnipeg in 2018 and 2019. He even led the NHL in assists in 2018 with 68.
Last season, Wheeler played for the New York Rangers, putting up 9 goals and 21 points in 54 games. While his numbers have dipped, he can still be a bottom six forward and would be serviceable in blue and white as a Leaf.
