Columbus Blue Jacket fans everywhere were devastated when their star forward Patrik Laine made the tough decision to enter the Player Assistance Program to better look after his mental health.
Patrik Laine was one of Columbus's star players, with two 50-point seasons in a row. However, his game took a dive earlier this season after a clavicle injury and personal issues impacted his game. With only 9 points in 18 games, it seems this former Winnipeg Jet reached an all-time low.
"After careful consideration and discussion with my support network and the team, I have recognized the importance of prioritizing my mental health and well-being. Hockey has been my passion and my life, but I have come to realize that in order to perform at my best, I need to take this time to focus on myself."
"This won't likely come as a surprise, as Laine has been out of the lineup with a broken clavicle since Dec. 14 and enrolled in the NHL/NHLPA players' assistance program since Jan. 28. But Davidson made it official to The Athletic on Saturday, saying: 'He won't be back this season.' Laine's final totals: 6-3-9 and a minus-10 rating in 18 games."
Though Patrik Laine still has two years left in his 4-year contract for $34.8 million total, his future with the NHL still hangs in the balance. Hopefully, his time in the Player Assistance Program will give him the help he needs to overcome his current struggles.
