Leon Draisaitl was almost sent to another Canadian team but the trade fell through to the benefit of the Oilers.
Crazy Failed Blockbuster
Leon Draisaitl is known as one of the best players in the NHL right now. He has won a Hart trophy and has posted five straight 100 point pace seasons. Despite being arguably the 2nd best player in the NHL, he is the 2nd best player on his team with Connor McDavid dominating.
Recently, the trade that would have sent Draisaitl to Montreal has emerged and the package is nuts!
Note that the original tweet accidentally said Subban for Hall, they meant Subban for Weber.
To Edmonton: PK Subban 9th Overall (became Sergachev)
To Montreal: Leon Draisaitl Darnell Nurse 4th Overall Pick (became Puljujarvi)
Package Analysis
It is no doubt that Draisaitl is the best piece involved in this trade. However, this trade would change a lot for Edmonton.
They would have had PK Subban in some of his finest years but his fall off would have likely still happened eventually. The Oilers would have missed out on their superstar in Leon Draisaitl but would also be losing out on their number one defenseman in Darnell Nurse.
The pick swap seems nice, Puljujarvi for Sergachev but that is likely what would not have happened. The Oilers would have been looking for a forward to replace Draisaitl as opposed to a defenseman so they are likely ending up with somebody like Tyson Jost, Luke Kunin, or Logan Brown, the three next forwards.
This trade would have sent the Oilers years back and we would likely have seen Connor McDavid unable to will the Oilers to deep playoff runs all by himself. However, the Oilers would have had prime Taylor Hall to play alongside McDavid.
