On paper, this Edmonton Oilers forward group is enough to make them Stanley Cup contenders, but in net, there's one huge factor standing in their way of potential success.
In the summer of 2022, the Oilers landed what they thought would be a key piece of their success in Jack Campbell, paying him $5 million AAV over a five-year stretch.
Unfortunately, that deal immediately looks bad, as Campbell has struggled mightily since heading West, and now finds himself in the AHL bogging down the Oilers salary cap as they look to chase a Stanley Cup.
How much will it cost to move his contract?
While some Oilers fans were holding out hope that a buy-out would save them money, it doesn't do quite enough, and he can't be bought out until this July, so now, that leaves them with their only option for this season; a trade.
However, that won't be cheap at all, as NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun reveals they are actively looking to trade the goaltender, and if they want to do so, it may cost them a minimum of two first-round picks to do so.
As they are looking to make a Cup push, if the Oilers can make a wise deal like this and find additional help on their blue line it may be worth it, so now it just begs the question of whether or not the Oilers are ready to go all in, or whether they can handle paying him that money to keep their additional picks.
