The Oilers had a rocky start to the season but managed to pull themselves from 31st to 9th in the league. While the team boasts a few superstar players, one recent addition has been underperforming hard, putting his future with the team in serious jeopardy.
Connor Brown Continues To Underperform With The Oilers
Many people were hopeful about Brown's potential for the Oilers when first acquired. He has a history of point-scoring and already had connections to teammate Connor McDavid. Yet, Brown has been unable to help his team in any meaningful, sustainable way.
After a long stretch of poor performance on the ice, he was scratched back in December, much to his dismay. This was done in hopes that it would shake the game into him, albeit, rather unsuccessfully.
Despite this much-needed time off the ice, Brown still has only 5 assists and 0 goals in 52 games this season. This is not what you would call acceptable for a player of his supposed level and status in the NHL, and fans of the team have made that very clear.
Now, it seems that another scratch could end up being his last from this team. While he used to be one of the penalty kill specialists of his team, he is likely fading into the background after Edmonton acquired Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick, both of whom have played far more successfully this season.
The Oilers have a much better lineup now than they did at the start of the season, and it would not be unjustified to keep Brown out of the lineup when higher-producing players are readily available. It will certainly be interesting to see how Edmonton manages this matter.
