Today a former NHL GM and current television personality has confirmed that he believes the Edmonton Oilers made a mistake not matching Philip Broberg's offer sheet.
The Edmonton Oilers had been in the news a lot over the past couple of weeks. Everything began when the St. Louis Blues sent out an offer sheet to both Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway in an attempt to sign them.
After the offer sheets were made many around the NHL tried to figure out what the Oilers' plan was. In the eyes of many the Oilers would match one of the two and let the other play leave. However, when the dust settled and the deadline came the Edmonton Oilers decided to let both players leave to sign with the St. Louis Blues.
Now just days after that decision was made by the Edmonton Oilers fans and media are starting to discuss the move. One former GM in particular is not fond of what the Edmonton Oilers have done.
Former NHL GM Brian Lawton comments on the Oilers decision not to match Philip Broberg
In a new segment former Tampa Bay Lightning GM Brian Lawton spoke about the offer sheet situation. According to Brian Lawton the Edmonton Oilers are making a big mistake letting Philip Broberg go and he would have matched the defenseman's contract.
I would never let him go, Lawton said, speaking to Bob Stauffer of Oilers Now.
He expands to say that finding quality defensemen is the hardest thing to do in hockey. He believes the Oilers had one in Philip Broberg and let him slip right through their fingers.
I find defencemen to be the hardest thing to acquire in this game, and even though the story is still unwritten on Philip Broberg, he still showed some incredible poise and progress last year, and I believe that no matter what he'll be a Top 4 D in this league.
Despite Brian Lawton's difference in opinion, the moves are done. The Edmonton Oilers will continue to rely on their high-end offense and hope that the defense is good enough to stay afloat.
