On a recent edition of the Eric Francis Hour on Flames Talk, NHL player agent Ritch Winter shared that he and Mike Giordano have connected with Edmonton Oilers during the offseason, looking to give the veteran defenseman another chance at the Stanley Cup.

The Edmonton Oilers were as close as you could get to winning the Stanley Cup without the victory after nearly coming back to pull off a reverse sweep in Game 7 against the Florida Panthers. Now, the team is looking to come back with a vengeance but still has some blindspots to address. Among these are defensive positions heading into the 2024-25 season. Edmonton traded away Cody Ceci and a pick to the San Jose Sharks for Ty Emberson, and shortly after lost Philip Broberg to the St. Louis Blues in offer sheet deals, receiving upcoming draft picks as compensation.
Several fans and analysts have considered many active players across the NHL to fill these roles. However, it appears the oldest player in the league has become a quiet possibility during the offseason. During the recent Eric Francis Hour of Flames Talk, player agent Ritch Winter shared that he and Mike Giordano were connected to several teams, including the Edmonton Oilers. The reason that the 40-year-old defenseman has for wanting to play with the team is simple: he wants to win the Stanley Cup.
"We're talking to a lot of teams, and he's looking to win, you know. Even Gio doesn't think he has ten years left, so we want to try and win.

We've talked to Edmonton and Toronto, and Toronto's still not sure what's happening with Hakanpaa, and Gio's very patient.

I think Gio's holding firm until he finds an opportunity that gives him a high probability of being in that Stanley Cup Final, and obviously, Edmonton's a good place."
This is not the first time Mike Giordano was discussed as a possibility for the Edmonton Oilers, as multiple analysts have suggested the seasoned defenseman as an option for the team. Yet, with his age, declining play, and left shot, NHL analyst with The Oil Rig Gregory Babinski is not so convinced the 1100-game veteran would be the right sign for the team.
"Mark Giordano has been the oldest player in the league the past two seasons, and despite still being effective is clearly on the decline. Giordano is a left shot, further obscuring a fit on the Oilers."
Ritch Winter had already answered the largest concern NHL fans held with another season of Mike Giordano. On a recent edition of the Jason Gregor Show, the player agent iterated that his biggest issue is facing the bias against his age. Despite this, Mike Giordano is reportedly in some of the best shape he has been and has trained with the same group that helped lead him to the Norris Trophy only a few years ago. Ultimately, Ritch Winter believes that one team is going to get a solid depth defenseman for a great deal.
"Right now you're trying to do two things: Distinguish your client from the rest of the pack that's still out there, and overcome biases. Again, Mark Giordano, he's in the best condition of his life. He went away from the Leafs' training facility because he didn't have a deal with them, didn't want to give any indication he was looking for a deal. If they come talking, they will. He went back to the same training group of trainers that he did when he won the Norris Trophy at age 37. Like, yeah, he's 40 now, but he won the Norris at 37, right? So I feel very strongly that Gio will- he'll not have a Norris Trophy season because wherever he plays, he's not playing for his power play like he did then. But he'll be a very good, top-four, minimum top-six player who outperforms everybody. But I've got to help overcome biases because what's his problem? He's 40. He's 40. So what? He's 40. He was the third in plus-minus on the Leafs and he only played half the season, so he'd probably end up in the top two. He was third among Leaf defensemen in points per minute played at even strength, which is what he played for the most part. Somebody's going to get a real bargain."
As he continued addressing Mike Giordano's status heading into the upcoming NHL season, Ritch Winter shared he had a direct discussion with Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman about the type of role Mike Giordano could fulfill. Winter reportedly compared the player to two-time Chicago Blackhawks Stanley Cup winner Michal Rozsval, who during their 2014-15 run played at just the right moments to help the team clinch the big win. However, he acknowledged this type of decision would likely come after training camp starts back up.
"Stan Bowman, to go back to the Michal Rozsvalstory, I told Stan right off the bat, Rosie number two, man. Somebody goes down one or two games, third game, fourth round, Gio will have the experience to step in and be the Michal Rozsval, fill that hole for a game or two. He might be the difference. I think Stan's buying it, but they've got seven defensemen they're toying around. Some think they should have an extra one in case they get injured because there's no depth with Ceci and Broberg gone, but that's a decision that ends up getting made as they're, you know, facing the music when camp starts and they now have to actually look at their depth, and in many cases, they're going to go 'Oh my gosh,' you know?"
With the player now with a clear connection to the Oilers, more fans and analysts have taken a closer look at how Mike Giordano could fit into Edmonton's roster. The Super Fan contributor Sunil Agnihitori aggregated data that detailed trends in his usage, shot differentials, and penalty-kill performance. Upon completing his research, Agnihitori concluded that Mike Giordano would be a smart move for the Oilers on a PTO deal, which could make things look better for a seemingly near-desperate Ritch Winter.
"Based on all of this, I would consider bringing in Giordano to the Oilers training camp on a PTO. I'm not overly confident in the Oilers defensive group, and there's a lot of uncertainty on how the new defencemen will fit into the roster, what roles they'll have and what the pairings could be like.

Giordano has been fairly consistent the last few years, playing a depth role for his last 200 games and helping keep the puck going in the right direction at even-strength. He's also someone that can help with the penalty kill, and potentially mentor some of the younger players who need to emerge from the Oilers prospect pool.

Because of the inefficient contracts, and unbalanced roster, management needs to be actively looking for inexpensive roster players and squeeze out as much value as possible."
Although he turns 41 early in October, Mark Giordano's numbers do not lie, and he could and likely will have another respectable season as an NHL defenseman. Whether or not Ritch Winter can snag him a deal with the Edmonton Oilers, it may still be several weeks before we know for sure. Hopefully, Stan Bowman will not regret the decision he makes on the veteran player by the next Stanley Cup playoffs.
