For weeks now, the Montreal Canadiens have been linked to Patrik Laine, and with few other teams reaching out to the Columbus Blue Jackets, at this point it's simply a one team race. This may ultimately hurt the return for Columbus, but without the team needing to move him, given his contract runs for another two years, the Canadiens will still need to make a solid offer.
Now, the respected Bob Trask has weighed in on the situation, revealing his official trade proposal for the two parties, as they make the perfect trade partners to give each other exactly what they want in a potential deal.
On paper, this could be seen as an overpay for Montreal, but with the Blue Jackets retaining $2.3 million of Laine's contract for the next two years as well as taking on either Dvorak or Evans, it evens out quite a lot. Beyond that, the Blue Jackets would be landing just one second-round pick, with the teeam instead opting to get several prospects, and with the Canadiens looking to take a step forward, it's a deal they need to make.
