The Gaudreau family has responded to the most heartfelt tribute since the passing of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.
Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield announced he'd be changing his NHL jersey number from #22 to #13 in honor of his idol, Johnny hockey.
The NHL even helped make this meaningful gesture possible. The deadline to change a number was too late, but Gary Bettman made an exception due to the dire circumstances.
Since Caufield shared his tribute, Johnny's wife, Meredith Gaudreau, and his close friend, Kevin Hayes, have both shown their support.
The last few years playing as No. 22 have been some of the best years of my life. It truly has been a dream come true and I will forever hold those memories and that number close to me. I wore No. 13 at a point in my career because of Johnny and now I will be wearing it again to honor him. He paved the way for smaller players and proved we had a future in this game at the highest level. I will forever be grateful to him for inspiring me and others. Rest in peace, Johnny Hockey.
Hayes left a short but sweet comment, saying, spelling Caufield's first name backward.
Love this eloc," he wrote spelling Caufield's first name backwards.
Meredith's response was equally touching.
Highlight of his summer was with you guys. He loves you eloc," echoing Hayes' sentiment.
It's clear that Caufield has the full support of Johnny's friends and family in honoring a player he deeply admired. The rest of the hockey community surely stands with him too.
