The Canadiens acquired Laine on Monday along with a 2026 2nd round pick for Jordan Harris, and Juraj Slafkovsky is thrilled about his newest teammate, stating he was very invested in the 2016 draft and who would go 1st overall between Laine and Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews.
«I just landed in Prague and it popped up on my phone and I was so happy,» In 2016, I was probably 13 or 14 at that time, and I was a big fan of his, waiting to see whether he or [Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston] Matthews would go first (in the NHL Draft), so I was a fan of his back in the day.»
It's safe to say that Montreal's young star is very excited to skate alongside Laine, who is coming off of a season where he only played 18 games, spending time injured and in the NHL's player assistance program.
Slafkovsky also mentioned that this could be a fresh start for Laine, a sentiment that has been echoed by many Habs fans throughout the past few days as they are hopeful Laine will be a major addition to a forward core already featuring Slafkovsky, Cole Caufield, and Nick Suzuki.
«It's good to see him join our team and hopefully he's excited too,» Slafkovsky said. «I'm sure he wants to come and restart his career, and I feel like Montreal is a great place for him to do that.»
Habs fans should be even more excited about Laine now that one of their best players has come forward and said how excited he is to be playing with him, and hopefully they give Laine a warm Bell Centre welcome during his first home games in the city of Montreal.
