Today former New York Rangers GM Neil Smith spoke about the situation involving the Rangers and captain Jacob Trouba regarding his no-trade clause.
This summer has been a turbulent one for the New York Rangers and Jacob Trouba. Since the end of their season, there have been rumors of GM Chris Drury trading away Jacob Trouba. Reports even connected him to the Detroit Red Wings. Within days of these reports leaking Jacob Trouba submitted his updated no-trade clause and it included the Detroit Red Wings.
Apparently the holdup I have been reporting with Trouba to #LGRW is due to him putting Detroit on his no trade list once he found out thats where #NYR wanted to send him. Original @stefen_rosner
Now it seems #Sabres are most likely. Working to see whos going back to NYR. #NHL
Now days later fans and media are still discussing this fiasco. Even former New York Rangers General Manager Neil Smith weighed in.
Former Rangers General Manager discusses Rangers Jacob Trouba situation
Today a new clip of former New York Rangers and New York Islanders GM Neil Smith spoke about the Jacob Trouba situation. While discussing what happened he says he is shocked that the Rangers and current GM Chris Drury allowed the discussions to become public.
The thing that I'm surprised that in that situation is to allow this to happen, and to allow it to happen publicly, admitted Smith.
He also confirmed the long-rumored report that Jacob Trouba changed his no-trade clause to include the Detroit Red Wings once he heard of the discussions.
Now you go to him and it leaks out that you've talked to Detroit because he's a Michigan guy... and now you ask him for his 15 team no trade list, said Smith. They say Well screw you we're not giving it to you until July 1st and what do they do? They put down as one of the 15 no-trade teams Detroit, because it's already gotten out there.
With all of this news now publicly confirmed the New York Rangers will now continue searching for a trade partner that will send Jacob Trouba to a new home. If they cannot complete a trade they will need to find a way to repair the relationship with their captain before the season begins.
