The Philadelphia Flyers have a star on their hands in Matvei Michkov, but they will seemingly need to get John Tortorella on board before they get there.

John Tortorella is one of a handful old-school coaches remaining in the NHL, and while that brings with it many of positives, there's also some negatives that teams are still trying to work out. One negative is the emphasis on rookies not showing off their incredible skill, but at rookie training camp, that's exactly what top prospect Matvei Michkov did when he attempted to hit the Michigan, and unsurprisingly, it caught the attention of Tortorella.
Reportedly, the veteran coach looked straight to the front office staff on the balcony after the failed attempt, with the veteran coach likely not to be a massive fan of the move. However, GM Danny Briere is adamant that the pairing of Tortorella and Michkov will be good for the rookie's career.
"I know I've said this a few times before, but the chance to have him learn under Torts, we all know know that he's gifted offensively, very, very talented, but he's going to have the chance to learn under Torts to play the other side of the ice as well, and that gets me excited. He's going to get that base early on. I think it's just going to make him better for the rest of his career."

There's absolutely no doubting that Michkov has the talent and the confidence to thrive in the NHL, and if Tortorella can get him playing on both ends and working hard every night, we may be looking at the 2024/25 Calder Trophy winner.
