Jake Guentzel has just signed a seven-year, $63-million deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and has now begun to bash his former team, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Guentzel recently spoke to NHL.com's Jessi Pierce, and said the deciding factor that made him choose Tampa over Pittsburgh was that the Lightning are perennial contenders. Ouch, tough pill to swallow, Penguins fans.
"They all know how to win," Guentzel told NHL.com's Jessi Pierce on Wednesday. "There's just a winning pedigree there. (And I) still feel like we have a chance to win."
"There's a lot of high-end players, elite players on the team, and just an unbelievable opportunity for me and my family to go do something else on our own," Guentzel said. "It's going to be fun for us. It's going to be different, it's going to be challenging, but it's going to be something that we're looking forward to."
Guentzel says he is looking forward to a fresh start with the Lightning. He knows how to win, as he did with the Penguins when they won the Stanley Cup back in 2017. If one bashing of the Penguins wasn't enough, Guenztel did it again, being heavily critical of the front office.
«My intention was to stay. They thought there was a better direction.»
Fans in Pittsburgh are sure going to miss Guentzel's scoring power and championship presence, as he tallied 52 points in the 50 games he played with the Penguins last season, before they ultimately traded him to the Carolina Hurricanes.
