For weeks now, it has appeared that Erik Karlsson is on the verge of being traded at any moment, and now, one respected NHL Insider has suggested a trade to make that happen.
Karlsson heading East
Ever since the reports emerged that he could be available, the two teams leading the charge to land Karlsson have been Pittsburgh and Carolina, and in this latest mock trade, the Penguins land their guy.
Unsurprisingly though, any deal involving Karlsson and that much money will need to involve a third team, so in this trade suggestion, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey has brought in the Chicago Blackhawks.
The trade
No trade to move Karlsson is going to be easy, but this was a suggestion that makes sense for all sides involved:
Penguins receive: Erik Karlsson with San Jose Retaining $4.5 million (39%).
San Jose receive: Ty Smith, Sam Poulin and the Penguins 2025 second round pick (which would convert to a first if the Penguins win the Cup in 2024 or 2025).
Chicago receive: Jeff Petry and the Penguins 2024 first-round pick.
As expected, there's plenty of moving pieces, but this one works for all three teams, and if Pittsburgh want to make a deal work, this is the type of offer they need to be looking at.
