Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has responded after he and his teammates were called out by head coach Sheldon Keefe after a loss to the New Jersey Devils.

A response from Maple Leafs Captain John Tavares after he was called out by head coach Sheldon Keefe.

Sheldon Keefe summoned his inner John Tortorella as he called out key players, including a specific message to Toronto Maple Leafs Sheldon Keefe after a 6-3 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Keefe seemed particularly disappointed with how Tavares handled the puck and played defence.
"John Tavares has been the example for us. He's been outstanding for us for a long period of time. He himself got carried away tonight. That's our captain. So, if that's going to happen, well, like, then the rest of our bench is, now we're just making it up as we go."
Despite the harsh words, Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has not responded to Sheldon Keefe's callout for accountability. He took it in stride, agreeing with his coach that change is needed.
"Especially as the captain, you really want to be at the top of the list for being accountable in setting the standard and the way we need to play."

"Sometimes you try to do too much, or you try to grab the game right back instead of just staying with the process and the way we need to play. So, it's just important to focus on that process. And when we do that over the course of 60 minutes, it usually leaves us in a pretty good spot."
Sheldon Keefe is hoping to get these issues cleared up before the Toronto Maple Leafs get into the playoffs. His job is most likely hinging on getting past the first and second round, something the team has not done for a long time.
Sheldon Keefe recently made Leafs fans furious after comments where he praised the team despite a loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Perhaps this factored into his decision to get tougher with his players.
