In his latest today for the Edmonton Journal, Kurt Leavins outlines why the Oilers are more likely to consider Travis Dermott over the likes of veterans Justin Schultz, Kevin Shattenkirk, or even Mark Giordano for PTO's.
That being said, there are a number of reasons that make Travis Dermott a fit for a possible PTO with Edmonton. We also know he's familiar with both Coach Kris Knoblauch and Jeff Jackson, so unlike Justin Schultz and Kevin Shattenkirk, who look more like they only want a guaranteed contract, all reports suggest Dermott would be up to a PTO. Plus, he's a lefty/righty and can play both sides of the defense. Also back in early summer, Bob Stauffer teased that the Oilers were targeting a player who had played for Knoblauch, which aligns with Dermott's profile now.
Travis Dermott, a 27-year-old left-shot defenseman, was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He has played in 329 games with the Leafs, Canucks, and Coyotes to this point in his career. He has had very decent underlying numbers throughout his time in the league. At his best, Dermott moves well for his size and provides balanced two-way play. He does have a tendency to occasionally take a risk on a pass that's not quite there.
