Leafs GM Brad Treliving echoed Marner's comment by keeping a tight lock on any discussion regarding Marner's contract status. That was that, Now Mitch Marner already appears to be in mid-season form as the Maple Leafs forward attended the first day of camp.
Rumors have circulated all summer that the Maple Leafs had intended to find Marner of fresh start this season. However, his no movement clause in his contract made that especially difficult. This past summer it was reported that Mitch Marner intends to walk in free agency in the upcoming summer. It was also reported that Marner's contract status was impacting the Leafs ability to sign free agents.
With no viewable direction by the team or Marner and his camp on hi contract resolution, many are to believe this may be a distraction for the team. Focus may shift from the performance on the ice to the contract demands, with Marner likely seeking a long-term lucrative contract. It will be interesting to see how he plays going forward. Historically, when pressure ramps up he has struggled so betting on himself could end up in a difficult situation.
The Maple Leafs will also have to ask themselves if this is the type of player that will help them get over the hump long term, Or will the distraction ultimately ruin their chances in finally winning Lord Stanley's Cup.
