As other eliminated players enjoy vacation time in the NHL offseason, Morgan Rielly and his wife Tessa Virtue are now in a legal battle with the City of Toronto after painting their home.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly had an impressive showing in the regular season, pulling in 7 goals and 51 assists in 72 games played. Unfortunately, he had his Stanley Cup playoffs run cut short after the team lost in Game 7 of their first-round series against the Boston Bruins.

However, while many of his fellow NHLers are enjoying some needed time off, Rielly and his wife Tessa Virtue are now entangled in a legal battle with the City of Toronto after the couple decided to paint the exterior of their home.
"Morgan Rielly and Tessa Virtue battle in the paint literally"
The couple owns a home built in 1912 that falls under heritage home laws. Despite this, the two supposedly followed proper permit protocols in requesting permission to paint their house. However, according to local reports, Toronto's Heritage Planning staff claimed they were unaware of this note and subsequently ordered Rielly and Virtue to stop painting their house.
"But because the house, which was built in 1912, is located within the North Rosedale Heritage Conservation District (NRHCD) permission has to be granted to make any alterations to its exterior.

The report says that in May, 2023 a building permit was issued for the property, allowing the owners to construct a single-storey rear addition and a detached parking garage.

A few months later in September a revised building permit was issued and staff say that the updated drawings at that time included a note that 'the brick was to be painted.'

However, they said that 'Heritage Planning staff were not aware of this note' when they approved the permit."
While it may seem unusual to have such stringent rules for painting your own home, the preservation of historic architecture is important for many local economies and should be taken seriously. However, when a couple faces a lawsuit for the incompetence of others, there is little question on whether the hand of the law overreaches reasonable bounds. Hopefully, Morgan Rielly and Tessa Virtue can navigate this tricky matter unscathed and the Heritage Planning committee will take this as a lesson in reading thoroughly.
