Alex Ovechkin ranks his favorite teams in the NHL

In a recent interview with his friend and blogger Amiran Sardarov, Alex Ovechkin, who has spent his entire career with the Washington Capitals, was asked to name his favorite NHL teams aside from his own.
Ovechkin provided two answers, reflecting his appreciation for different styles of play and standout players.
Ovechkin talks about his two favorite teams
First, Ovechkin mentioned the Tampa Bay Lightning. He has faced off against the Lightning many times, especially early in his career when both teams were part of the old Southeast Division.

He admires their high-tempo, high-scoring style, which aligns with his own gameplay during his prime. Notably, Ovechkin has had great personal success against the Lightning, with 96 career points, including 50 goals, making them his third most frequent victim.
The Lightning also boast prominent Russian players like Nikita Kucherov, the 2019 NHL MVP, and Andrei Vasilevskiy, the Vezina Trophy winner the same year. Ovechkin's appreciation for the team extends beyond their playing style to the individual talents of these players.
Ovechkin's second choice was the Edmonton Oilers. He highlighted the influence of their superstar, Connor McDavid, who Ovechkin has often praised.

McDavid, regarded as the best hockey player in the world, has impressed Ovechkin with his exceptional skills and consistency. The mutual respect between the two is evident; McDavid once gifted a signed stick to Ovechkin's son.
Ovechkin's admiration for McDavid is clear.
"He's from a different planet. How he plays the game. How he controls the puck. He controls his speed. He's very fun to watch.»
Interestingly, by choosing the Oilers, Ovechkin bypassed his childhood favorite, the San Jose Sharks. Despite being a huge Owen Nolan fan and receiving a Ulf Dahlen jersey as a child, Ovechkin's current preferences highlight his appreciation for dynamic, high-performing teams and players.
