Alex Ovechkin was very critical of former head coach Dale Hunter, saying his tactics led his offensive numbers to suffer while playing for him.
Ovechkin claims that ex head coach Dale Hunter would bench him regularly when the team was in the lead, which led to a lack of ice time and inhibited him from adding to his offensive numbers.
«There was a coach who (benched me),» Ovechkin said. «We were playing the first period, we were leading 1-0, I was sitting down. The score was 1-1, go play. It was Dale Hunter.»
«It was 2012. We were playing in the playoffs, playing against the Rangers. Third period, power play, I scored a goal. Well, that's it, I realized that I was going to sit now. I sat down. And so I sat like that for 20 minutes.»
Ovechkin said Hunter's primary focus was defense. He went on to say that when the Capitals were trailing in a game, Hunter would send him on the ice along with Alex Semin and Nicklas Backstrom in the hopes of scoring a goal. As soon as the Caps took the lead, Ovechkin noticed his ice time greatly diminished and he would just be sitting on the bench for the remainder of the game.
«He didn't care, you see, he was on his own wavelength,» Alex Oveckhin added.
Ovechkin is now being coached by Spencer Carbery, whom Ovechkin says is a lot better at communicating with his players, and Ovi feels much more comfortable being able to talk to him before and after a game about any issues that arise. Here's hoping that this budding relationship between the two will give Ovechkin extra motivation to shatter Wayne Gretzky's goal record next season.
