Following brief inactivity, rumors about Clayton Keller replacing Mitch Marner on the Toronto Maple Leafs have recirculated following Auston Matthews' recent social media activity.

Clayton Keller and Auston Matthews have been good friends for a while, both entering the NHL in the first round of the 2016 Draft. Keller had even mentioned the two tend to keep in touch in an interview following the most recent NHL All-Star Game.
"Clayton Keller and Auston Matthews had great chemistry on the ice at the NHL All-Star Game 🌟

Keller spoke about playing with Matthews and their relationship off the ice."
Yet, many believed their relationship was not just about friendship. Several fans spotted the two watching a UFC event together, sparking rumors that Matthews may be trying to recruit him for Toronto. The speculation was that Keller would be the main name in a trade to replace Mitch Marner, sending him to Utah.
"Rumours swirling that Auston Matthews has recruited Clayton Keller to join the Toronto Maple Leafs. Keller very unhappy with the Coyotes relocation to Utah per sources. You know who's not in Vegas with the boys? Mitch Marner. Reports saying he had to take a bubble bath with his wife instead. Could be a Mitch Marner to Utah Hockey Club for Keller + prospect and pick. Marner trade front really picking up here. Expect some fireworks July 1st"
However, nothing about Mitch Marner's future with the Maple Leafs changed on July 1st, or since then. It was only a few days ago these rumors reignited after Auston Matthews shared an Instagram Story showing his and Keller's dog on a playdate.
"Auston Matthews and Clayton Keller's dogs are having a play date."
Though this is an adorable photo-op and a clear display of a solid friendship, it takes a lot more to acquire a player for your team. Yet, given their obvious rapport and on-ice chemistry, it might be time for the Toronto Maple Leafs to make a major change to their Core 4.
