The NHL has a toll on the bodies of even the most successful players. It seems for one, that time may be coming sooner than expected.

Alex Ovechkin Set To Retire After Capitals Contract Expires

Captain of the Washington Capitals Alex Ovechkin is one of the biggest names in hockey given the sheer amount of goals he has scored, bested only by The Great One himself. So it may come as a shock to some that he announced he expects to retire after his current contract expires.

The 38-year-old Ovechkin has already had a great season with the Capitals, having broken the record for most empty-net goals and is currently on his way to the longest goal-scoring streak.

With 836 career goals, he is only 59 goals away from beating Wayne Gretzky's record. While it cannot be certain if he will reach that number by his retirement, we know the NHL will not be the same with him.
