Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is hoping for big things from Cole Perfetti this season after last year's breakout performance. He needs to keep it up.

The Jets are fresh off a 110-point season and have a Vezina Trophy winner in their net in Connor Hellebuyck, with a new coaching staff. Things seem to be looking good for the franchise, however GM Cheveldayoff doesn't seem to be happy with just that, as he has his eyes set on the future young talent, in particular Cole Perfetti.
Perfetti had a good year last season, scoring 19 goals and 19 assists in 71 games. The 10th overall pick from the 2020 draft didn't live up to expectations the previous two seasons as he dealt with a lot of injuries. Cheveldayoff is going to need Perfetti to continue to build on last season's performance, as a step back could spell trouble for the young forward. Being drafted 10th overall in the NHL means you need to perform well on a consistent basis. It comes with a certain level of expectations.
«I think Cole is just scratching the surface,» said Cheveldayoff. «Unfortunately for him, he had a couple of injuries in his 19- and 20-year-old years, but last year he had a great year. We're looking forward to good things with him moving forward with our core.

«He's been around for a couple of years now, he's one of the guys you start integrating within that group and that's the kind of team that we have here right now. We had a great year last year, but I think we need some of our younger guys to continue to take steps and move forward for us to grow.»

The problem with Perfetti is that he still hasn't been signed to a contract, so Cheveldayoff will need to get moving on figuring out a number that works for both he and the player. There is still a little bit of discrepancy between what should be the right dollar amount for Perfetti because of all the injuries he's dealt with, and the fact that he hasn't shown consistency yet.
Cheveldayoff and the fans are counting on Perfetti and the other prospects in the organization to really step forward and help get the team over the hump and to a Championship.
