There's some trade talk swirling around the NHL, with a proposal suggesting that Toronto Maple Leafs' star Mitch Marner could be heading to the Winnipeg Jets in a massive deal.
Marner's in the final year of a hefty $10.9 million contract, and he's got a no-trade clause, so it's not surprising that GM Brad Treliving might want to explore his options and get something back if Marner's on the move.
In this proposed trade scenario, Marner would land in Winnipeg in exchange for Dylan Demelo, Chaz Lucius, and Nikolaj Ehlers.
Now, when it comes to Ehlers, he's had his ups and downs, especially in the playoffs. He struggled this postseason, finishing with zero goals and just two points in five games. Sure, he's been a solid 5v5 chance generator, but his playoff track record isn't exactly stellar, with just four goals and 14 points in 37 games. Yet, he's not consistently getting top ice time or power play minutes, which could be a concern.
Ehlers did sign a pretty hefty seven-year, $42,000,000 contract back in 2017, with an annual cap hit of $6,000,000. And let's not forget about Dylan DeMelo, who's a restricted free agent. If the Leafs pull off this trade, they'd get the rights to DeMelo, giving them a shot at locking him in for the future. And then there's Lucius, who's got some injury history but still packs a punch as a scoring forward.
It's definitely an intriguing proposal, and it'll be interesting to see how it all shakes out in the end.
