Last night saw the first round of the 2024 NHL draft, during which 32 top prospects would be claimed by their potential future franchise. The Toronto Maple Leafs got ahold of the 31st pick overall, using it to draft Oshawa Generals defenseman Ben Danford.
However, his drafting process did not go without issue. During his time on stage, he shook hands with his future head coach and GM Craig Berube and Brad Treliving. However, he snubbed NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman at the end of the line and proceeded to put on his jersey instead.
Naturally, this has some mixed reactions from fans. While many appreciate the subtle dig at Bettman, others are worried this will impact the player's and Maple Leafs' chance at a cup during the rest of his time as commissioner.
While it has been 31 years since the last Canadian Stanley Cup win, it is hard to imagine that one missed handshake will be the reason for a continued drought. Regardless, Toronto fans will have a new player to look out for who is not afraid to get back at Bettman.
