A heartbreaking injury has forced an Australian field hockey player to amputate part of his finger in order to give him a chance to compete at the Olympics.

Matt Dawson, a prominent player on Team Australia, voluntarily amputated a part of his finger as it was his only hope to give him a better chance at competing at next week's Olympics. Without the amputation, recovery would take a lot longer, essentially not allowing him to compete.

Dawson won the Silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. He didn't want to risk not being able to compete this year, so he had to make the gut wrenching decision of losing a part of his finger for the rest of his life.
«I made an informed decision with the plastic surgeon, not only for the opportunity to play in Paris but for life after as well,» Dawson told 7NEWS, per Olympics.com.

Dawson has a positive view on the days ahead, and he's hoping to heal in time. Colin Batch, the coach for Team Australia, spoke very highly of his player, calling him committed to the rest of his team and saying he would never choose to voluntarily amputate a finger if he were in Dawson's position.
«It's a bit of a change and an exciting challenge,» said Dawson

Team Australia has their eyes set on Gold this year, and Dawson's teammates will be extra motivated knowing one of their closest friends chose to remove his finger for them. If that doesn't prove the passion and dedication Dawson has for his team, nothing else will.
