The Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks have pulled of a trade to send blueliner Cody Ceci to California, while fellow defenceman Ty Emberson goes to Alberta

The Edmonton Oilers and the San Jose Sharks have made an exchange for defenceman. Late Sunday night, the Oilers announced they have sent Cody Ceci, and a third-round draft pick in 2025, to the Sharks for Ty Emberson.
San Jose Sharks General Manager Mike Grier released a statement on the trade, calling Cody Ceci a veteran defenceman, who he expects to help the team.
"Cody is a solid, competitive veteran defenseman who brings a well-rounded skill set to our group," said Grier. "He's a strong penalty killer who can also contribute offensively and he brings extensive playoff experience. We're excited to have him join our organization."
For Edmonton, this was a clear salary dump, as the Oilers gave up a third-rounder in order to get rid of Ceci's $3.25 million cap hit in 2025-25 in an attempt to match offer sheets from the St. Louis Blues for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Edmonton has until Tuesday to match, or the two players will head to Missouri. Ty Emberson, picked up by Edmonton in the trade, is a former third round pick (73rd overall) in 2018. He played in the NHL for the first time in 2023-24, scoring a goal and 10 points in 30 games.
The Oilers will need to do some further house-cleaning and penny pinching in order to keep Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Expect more money movement to come at any time. Earlier on Sunday, the Oilers acquired Russian right wing Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks. The price tag was a fourth-round pick, which the Oilers had acquired from the Ottawa Senators in a previous trade.
