A new fan movement has taken place over the past couple of days. The premise of the movement involves the league retiring another number league-wide other than Wayne Gretzky's number 99.
Ceremony For Hockey Legend Sparks Debate Around The NHL
This week will be a big one in Pittsburgh for the Penguins organization. This is because franchise legend Jaromir Jagr is in town to get his number retired. Jagr decided to go for a skate with the team at 52 years old during their practice today.
Jagr will have an entire ceremony and be recognized and celebrated for his contributions in the NHL. Some fans however do not believe this is enough recognition for Jagr. There has been a movement that has started to give Jagr the Gretzky treatment and have the entire NHL retire his number.
Fans Start A Movement To Get The NHL To Retire Jagr's Number
A post on X by Barstool Sports is the beginning of a movement to get Jagr's number immortalized forever by the NHL.
Jaromir Jagr Is Getting His Number Retired By The Penguins This Weekend, But That's Not Enough. It Needs To Be The Whole Damn League
This opinion is shared by many fans around the NHL. In the replies to the Barstool post many people put their own opinion on the topic. Several were in support of the idea
Others understand the argument but believe other players are more deserving first.
This debate will likely continue without any action from the NHL. While the league likely won't retire the number players could decide to not wear the number much like what has happened with Mario Lemieux's #66 over the years.
