A mock trade has gained a lot of attention for sending Auston Matthews home to Arizona.

Matthews' Arizona Roots

Growing up in Arizona, Auston Matthews developed a passion for hockey in an unconventional hockey market. Now, with the possibility of joining his hometown team, Matthews' desire to be closer to friends and family may play a pivotal role in his decision-making process.

Trade Analysis

Should the Coyotes manage to secure the services of Auston Matthews, they would undoubtedly acquire a superstar. Despite a slightly underwhelming performance last year, Matthews still managed to tally an impressive 40 goals and 85 points in 74 games.
Additionally, being in close proximity to his roots might increase Matthews' willingness to sign a long-term contract with the Coyotes, further solidifying their position as a top team.
In exchange for Matthews, the Toronto Maple Leafs would require a substantial return. The potential package from the Coyotes includes two highly valuable players: Clayton Keller and Logan Cooley.
Cooley, the third overall pick in the 2022 draft, has shown considerable promise during his time at the University of Minnesota. Developing a strong chemistry with top Leafs prospect Matthew Knies, Cooley's skills and potential have placed him among the elite prospects in hockey today.
On the other hand, Keller, already a star, showcased his abilities during the previous season by notching an impressive 86 points in 82 games. Notably, Keller's total points surpassed Matthews' but it must be noted that he played in 8 more games.
With the addition of Cooley and Keller, the Maple Leafs would gain potentially two top-line players, providing a boost to their overall team balance. Moreover, the inclusion of an early second-round pick in the deal would help secure the Leafs' future despite the loss of Matthews.
As rumors continue to swirl around Auston Matthews' potential departure from the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Arizona Coyotes have emerged as a serious contender for his services.
