This afternoon the Vancouver Canucks and Colorado Avalanche have completed a trade that will send a former first-round pick to Vancouver.

Reports are coming in that the Colorado Avalanche and Vancouver Canucks have made a trade as they begin finalizing their rosters. The Avalanche are trading former first-round pick Erik Brannstrom to the Vancouver Canucks for Tucker Poolman and a 4th round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Erik Brannstrom has had a turbulent career after being a first-round pick by the Ottawa Senators in 2017. In his draft year, Erik Brannstrom was considered one of the best offensive defensemen in the class. Now 7 years later Erik Brannstrom has turned into an undersized puck-moving two-way defenseman.
During his time in the NHL to this point, Erik Brannstrom is coming off his best season. In 2023-24 Erik Brannstrom had 20 points in 76 games with the Ottawa Senators. With Vancouver's offensive style of play it could be interesting to see if they can unlock Erik Brannstrom's potential in a way that the Ottawa Senators have not been able to at this point.
He will now get a brand new opportunity to find success this time with the Vancouver Canucks. It remains to be seen what his exact role will be in the NHL once he makes his way to Vancouver. According to a further report Erik Brannstrom has been placed on waivers and will be sent to the AHL if he clears.
The Colorado Avalanche add a depth defenseman in Tucker Poolman who has struggled with injuries over the last few seasons. His last season where he played a significant amount of games was 2021-22 where he played 40 games and tallied 3 points. They also receive a draft pick in 2024 which they will need after trading away many of their draft picks in recent years. According to reports Tucker Poolman will end up being placed on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR).
The Avalanche get a draft pick and potential veteran in exchange for Erik Brannstrom who seemed destined for waivers eventually. Time will tell if they regret letting Erik Brannstrom go or if it will be worth the assets they got in return.
