The Calgary Flames made an unusual move today as they renounced their rights to one of their top prospects. The reason why will shock many hockey fans.

Flames Give Up Rights To Prospect After Legal Conviction In Finland

19-year-old Flames center prospect Topi Ronni had his career in the NHL and hockey altogether effectively ended today. The Flames renounced their rights to him after he was convicted of a crime that was committed two years ago. This is a very serious matter in which the Flames wanted no part of. Luckily, the team had not even signed him to an entry-level-contract yet.
Ronni was drafted 59th overall by the Flames in 2022. Since then he hasn't looked like a future NHL player. Now he certainly won't be playing in the NHL at any point. Furthermore, his Liga club in Finland has also terminated his contract, effectively ending his career in hockey altogether.
#Flames draft pick has his contract terminated by club team in Finland. Topi Ronni received a one year suspended sentence from a district court for **** - which happened when he was a minor.
Our thoughts go out to the victim and their family.
