The Colorado Avalanche is on the brink of making history by potentially having the highest-paid duo in NHL history with Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon.

The team, known for its impressive track record since relocating from Quebec City in 1995, has secured playoff spots 20 times in 28 seasons and boasts three Stanley Cup victories, with their latest triumph in 2022 against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Colorado Avalanche set to make NHL history with Rantanen extension

At the core of the Avalanche's success are Rantanen and MacKinnon, a dynamic forward pair who have consistently delivered outstanding performances. As of March 2023, they ranked third for the most points scored by teammates since the 2015-16 season, just behind Tampa Bay's Kucherov and Stamkos. This statistic underscores their crucial role in the team's offensive strategy.
Rantanen, who is entering the final year of his six-year contract worth $9.25 million annually, is reportedly in talks for a contract extension with the Avalanche. Insiders suggest this new deal could span 7-8 years, signaling the team's commitment to securing his talent long-term.
MacKinnon, on the other hand, is already under contract until 2031 with an annual salary of $12.6 million. Together, their current combined earnings are $21.85 million per year. Should Rantanen's new contract see a significant increase, they could surpass the combined $24.75 million annual earnings of Toronto's Auston Matthews and William Nylander, making them the highest-paid duo in NHL history.
While the exact details of Rantanen's forthcoming contract remain under wraps, it's clear that the Avalanche is prepared to offer a substantial increase to retain his services. However, whether his new deal will exceed $12.15 million annually remains to be seen. Regardless, the Colorado Avalanche's strategic moves highlight their ambition to maintain their elite status in the NHL with a powerhouse duo leading the charge.
