Leon Draisaitl is now locked in with the Edmonton Oilers for the next eight years, and while it's assumed Connor McDavid will stay put, that's not yet guaranteed.

The Edmonton Oilers fanbase had cause for celebration on Tuesday when the extension of Leon Draisaitl became official, but when talking about his new deal, the superstar forward shared a subtle warning for their fans over the future of captain Connor McDavid.
«Connor's going to do what's best for him, right?» he said on Tuesday when asked about each of them doing what's best for themselves. «That's just the way this works, and it's supposed to work this way. I did what I felt was best for me personally.

Of course, he would love to play with his superstar teammate for a long time to come, and he made it clear that he wants the duo to remain in Edmonton as they look to build a genuine Stanley Cup threat for the foreseeable future.
«Do I hope Connor follows along? I'd be lying if I said no. Of course I want him to stay on board, and i want all our pieces to stay on board.»
After Draisaitl became the NHL's highest paid player at $14 million per year, McDavid, who currently earns $12.5 million is expected to shatter that record, with some suggestions that with the rising salary cap, he could command upwards of $18 million annually. With two years left on his deal, the captain can't make a decision until the summer of 2025, and according to The Athletic, he could demand absolutely anything on his next deal, including more than 15% of the cap.
"McDavid is, in short, one of one. And one of the best players to ever play the sport.
Fifteen percent isn't going to work.»
Right now, it's clear that McDavid is by far and away the best player in the NHL, so it stands to reason that his next deal will be a major upgrade, but if he truly does what's best for him with an Evan Bouchard contract extension looming, could that mean leaving Edmonton? We will find out in the summer of 2025 or 2026.
