The Edmonton Oilers have been inundated in their playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings. Yet, despite the heavy competition, the team is reportedly one step closer to a long-term deal with defenseman Vincent
Desharnais.

Vincent Desharnais was a seventh-round draft pick in 2016 but has made waves with Edmonton as a key defensive player. Now, according to former hockey player and current Oilers broadcaster Bob Stauffer, the player is close to a deal that could last 6-7 years.
«We assume Vincent Desharnais will be signed to a long term extension, possibly 6 or 7 years»
While this could be a great deal for the 27-year-old player to get solid, guaranteed income for several years, not all fans are convinced this is best for the team. While he remains aggressive on the ice for playoffs, he could not be the best choice for long-term investment for the role he serves the team.
"Don't know why so many Oilers fans are talking about a 7 year deal for a 27 year old Vincent Desharnais

He's a solid bottom pairing guy, you don't give those guys more than 3 year deals or else it's asset mismanagement. The most I'd be willing to offer is 3 x 1.8 #LetsGoOilers"
Others find this potential deal to be a great move for Edmonton, asserting that he is a player who must be kept away from free agency.
"As a Montreal Canadiens fan, I'm jealous. Vincent Desharnais is like Arber Xhekaj but French and right handed. You gotta lock guys like this up. We recently saw American Vlasic get 6x4, I'm thinking that Desharnais is getting 7x5.5. Well deserved. Big W for oilers nation"
With the Oilers playing the fifth game of their series against the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday, it may be some time before we receive any more updates on Desharnais and his future with the team. He is expected to be in their third-line defensive lineup in the game at Rogers Plance.
