Following a conversation with team CEO Jeff Jackson, Oilers Legend Paul Coffey will likely serve another year as Edmonton's defense coach.

At the start of the 2023-24 regular NHL season, the Edmonton Oilers were in a massive hole, sinking to almost the very bottom of the league. Unsurprisingly, the team fired coaches Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson. Their replacements were Kris Knoblauch and Paul Coffey.
"FIRED: The Edmonton Oilers have fired Head Coach Jay Woodcroft and Assistant Coach Dave Manson.

Additionally, the Oilers have hired Kris Knoblauch as Head Coach and have named Paul Coffey as an Assistant Coach."
The Edmonton Oilers soon went on one of the most impressive turnarounds in recent NHL history. despite a rough start to the season, the change in coaching and attitude helped the team almost pull off a reverse sweep in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers.
"The Edmonton Oilers have been eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs after making it to the Finals. The Oilers won three straight games after initially being down 3-0 in the series.

The Oilers also went from having the second worst record in the league to reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in the same year 🤯 This was also the first time they made the finals since 2006.

GG's to the Florida Panthers🤝"
Many attribute Edmonton's success to Paul Coffey, who took over the task of defense coaching in his biggest return to the Oilers bench since his last season playing for the team in 1987. Following concerns that he may step back into retirement, Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal shared that after conversations with team CEO Jeff Jackson, Coffey iterated that he is likely to return for one more season as a coach. Coffey made it clear he felt he had an excellent rapport with the team and a clear joy working with the team he played with for seven years.
"I enjoyed it. The defence is awesome, they're all good. Were there ups and downs in player's games? Absolutely. As a coach you have to be there for them, good or bad. I think they enjoyed a different approach.

The coaching was fun. I've always loved Edmonton. Like Gretz, like Mess. Who wouldn't want to watch Connor McDavid up close and personal every day? This team has a chance to win every single game."
Though he cannot take credit for all of Edmonton's recent successes or failures, it is clear the Oilers can expect to see him back behind the bench. Taking into account his history as a payer, they can expect to be in good hands.
