The Edmonton Oilers are in big trouble, with only a few days remaining to figure out how they want to proceed with the offer sheets they received. They need to clear cap space if they want to match these two offers.
There was talk recently that the Montreal Canadiens may be able to offer GM Stan Bowman some assistance in order for him to keep his two players. GM of the Habs Kent Hughes has a lot of cap space he can work with, so perhaps he would be willing to take on a contract of the Oilers.
The Edmonton Oilers would likely also be getting future considerations in this trade, which means at a later date they and the Habs would be able to re-visit this and see how it benefited both teams, at which point a decision would be made as to what exactly the Habs would send to Edmonton. A lot of the times it ends up being draft picks or a prospect that isn't top rated. Either way, Stan Bowman would be very appreciative if he had this option to free up salary.
