Montreal Canadiens player Michael Pezzetta revealed on a hockey podcast that it's very hard playing in a Canadian market, especially due to the high taxes.

It's no surprise that the more money you make, the more in taxes you have to pay. The problem is that not all taxes are equal, and some players with similar salaries are paying significantly more depending on where they're playing. Let's take Victor Hedman and Elias Pettersson for example. Hedman, who plays in the state of Florida, has no state income tax, which means he is only paying taxes to the U.S. Federal government. Pettersson, on the other hand, plays in British Columbia, and has to pay taxes to both the Canadian Federal government as well as the B.C. Provincial government.
Fans of the Montreal Canadiens get ready, this one is going to hurt. Playing in the province of Quebec means players have to deal with the highest tax rate in the entire continent, at a rate of 25.75% for any income over $126,000, and that's not even including the Federal tax yet!

Pezzetta stated that playing for the Canadiens means players will lose 54% of their salary to both taxes combined. For this reason, it leads many players to completely avoid signing with the Habs, which would explain why they are usually never active during free agency because no players even bother giving them the time of day.

THE FLORIDA PANTHERS ARE THE 2023-24 #STANLEYCUP CHAMPIONS! 😺
It appears as though fans in Canada will have to start accepting the fact that teams from low or no state income tax will likely be winning the Cup a lot more often in the years ahead.
