The Flyers were very busy at the trade deadline this year. One of the moves the team made saw defenseman Sean Walker leave in exchange for a 1st round pick and veteran center Ryan Johansen.
Flyers Acquire Future Assets In Trades At Deadline
Despite the fact that the team was in a playoff spot, the organization wanted to ensure long-term success. General manager Danny Briere determined that the best way to do this was to sell off some of the team's prominent UFAs. Among the players delt was defenseman Sean Walker.
The team also made some depth moves as they acquired Dennis Gurianov from the Predators and Erik Johnson from the Sabres.
However, Ryan Johansen does not seem to factor into the team's plan, despite having another year left on his contract after this one.
Reason For Johansen Being Put On Waivers Revealed By NHL Insider
In what was an odd move at the time, the Flyers put Ryan Johansen on waivers immediately after they acquired him in the Sean Walker trade. Today the reasons for this were revealed by Elliotte Friedman on 32 thoughts. Apparently, Johansen has a 'complicated' history with Flyers head coach John Tortorella. Additionally, he shares the same agent that former Flyers prospect Cutter Gauthier has. This somehow impacted the team's decision to waive Johansen as well.
Friedman on 32TP talking about Flyers placing Johansen on waivers, him and Torts have a complicated history, to say the least, also Johansen's agent is also Cutter Gauthier's agent, or since he's in the NCAA, he is Gauthier's "family advisor", so there's some hard feelings there
The veteran center has still been an NHL quality player this year with 13 goals and 23 points in 61 games with the Avalanche this season so they certainly did not waive him because of his level of play. That being said, this move could mean he's played his last game in the NHL.
