Original misfit and 2023 Conn Smyth winner Jonathan Marchessault leaving Vegas this Summer for the Nashville Predators was hard enough on Golden Knigts fans.
The franchise icon helped build this franchise, and he was a key part of them winning the Stanley Cup in 2023. But hearing him talk about his exit after seven years , which left the sides on unspeakable terms is a bitter end to a golden ride.
In a recent interview, Marchessault talked about how Vegas is always pushing to get better every year no matter the cost. That's part of what's made this young franchise so successful. It's why he feels after everything he's done, he deserved more from management in his new contract.
He was hoping for a four-year deal, but GM Kelly McCrimmon and President of Hockey Operations George McPhee weren't willing to go beyond three years for the 33 year-old, and that was the breaking point.
The negotiations were cut and dry, and once it was clear they couldn't come to an agreement, that was it. No more talks, just a mutual parting of ways.
Marchessault said he has no hard feelings and nothing bad to say about Vegas. It shows the respect is still there, even if things didn't end the way he might've wanted.
He's off to Nashville now along with Steven Stamkos, who also saw an abrupt end to his tenure with the Tampa Bay Lightning. It'll be hard for Vegas to see the undrafted forward turned fan-favorite wear a different jersey, but they'll always have the Stanley Cup they celebrated together.
