After hearing very little about him over the past two years he has spent on the sidelines, recent drama occurred with Robin Lehner when he no-showed training camp, despite being required to undergo a medical exam. Now, the veteran goaltender has released a very brief statement revealing that his absence was expected by the team.
This comes on the back of a statement made by Golden Knights General Manager Kelly McCrimmon, who revealed that Lehner will not be reporting to the team this season, with the organization looking to the NHL to take further steps.
«(Robin) not be reporting to the club this year,» Vegas GM Kelly McCrimmon said Thursday. «He continues to be unfit to play. There are unique circumstances surrounding this situation that the NHL, the NHLPA and (Vegas) are working through. Collectively, we are assessing our next steps, and when we have more to say, we will.»
At this point, it's unclear why this became such a huge story, as it appears both sides were not expecting Lehner to report, but with the team looking to get leverage from the league to potentially get out of the contract, it makes some sense. At 33-years of age, Lehner last played during the 2021/22 season, and has been dealing with a hip issue ever since, and while we may not see him back on the ice for some time, it appears we haven't heard the end of this story.
